COMPUTER AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
Technology is integrated into the curriculum as developmentally appropriate to each level. The school does not use computers in the preschool classroom. This is a period that should maximize social interaction between children and between student and teacher. At the primary (K-1) level, computers are used for drill and practice and simple word processing. Simple programs reinforce number, letter and word concepts.
The technology program becomes more complex at the upper levels – using computers as a tool in their learning activities.
The goal of the elementary technology classes is to ensure that New Morning School curriculum is meeting the standards outlined by the US Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Education. To accomplish this goal, students work on various projects that build life-long technology literacy and reinforce key academic skills. Their assignments and activities include working with a programmable robot, building web sites, developing keyboarding skills, exploring computer graphic and multi-media software, reinforcing reading and writing skills using a variety of creative tools, and developing word processing and spreadsheet skills. Visit the International Society for Technology in Education for more information on technology education standards.
In the middle school the technology program progresses in difficulty. Each middle school student meets in a computer class every week, practices weekly keyboarding skill development, and uses computers for their daily assignments.
Middle School computer skills are taught in three primary areas of focus: keyboarding, business software, and application with integrated learning. The business software includes: Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and limited Front Page. We also teach and discuss web design, digital photography, digital imaging and Photoshop.
More importantly, the middle school students use the computers to complement classroom assignments. The students studied ancient cultures and created a Power Point for use in their presentations to the class. In another assignment, the students created travel brochures in Publisher as they studied different countries as potential hosts for future Olympics.
