SCIENCE
In preschool and primary classes, there are daily discovery activities. These may be math or science related; they often include graphing and charting, or discovering a new scientific concept through hands-on learning.
Elementary and middle school students participate in science classes two to three times a week, covering a full scope of physical and life sciences. A four-year cycle of topics assures that students are exposed to many scientific concepts.
Science is hands-on at New Morning School. After an introduction and discussion, students engage in a related activity. For instance, when the elementary students were studying geology they made hard candy to show that igneous rock was formed from cooled lava or magma. They created a sedimentary snack with layered crackers, and used peanut butter to "stick" the layers of sediment together.
An example of a middle school activity included a study of sponges, cnidarians, worms and mollusks. They also covered crustaceans and echinoderms. They studied both living and preserved animals, including hydra, earthworms, flatworms, grasshoppers, crickets, mealworms, isopods and starfish.
